Other Work by Duncan Birmingham
Artist Duncan Birmingham’s first involvement with pop-ups arose when he was hitchhiking and got a lift with a publisher who was looking for someone to design a pop-up book. That book The Maya Aztecs and Incas Pop-Up was published in 1984.*
A deeper involvement with the intriguing art of paper engineering followed – teaching the subject to illustration students at the University of the West of England; running workshops for teachers and other interested groups both in England and other European countries; writing two comprehensive books on the subject Pop-Up! A Manual of Paper Mechanisms (published in 1997) and Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics: How to Make Folding Paper Sculpture (published in 2010). This Eagle pop-up card is adapted from Cut-and-Make Pop-Up Cards (published in 1998).
In 2014, in collaboration with filmmaker Jane Clegg, he started The Pop-Up Channel on YouTube, showcasing a growing collection of hugely popular pop-up card video tutorials. This Eagle pop-up features an M fold, which is explained in the tutorial below.
